PRIMAVERA 2021

[EN] In my installation Primavera (after Sandro Botticelli) I am reflecting on the idea of cultural heritage and on contemporary ecological preoccupations, in order to picture a time suspended in the absence of humans. The handmade textile flowers composing Primavera (products both of nature and of culture) reveal the artificiality of our relationship to nature and question the human exceptionalism in the face of history. Oscillating between vanity and domesticity, these flowers are extravagant elements of an imaginary herbarium. I thus underline the theatrical and profoundly nostalgic aspect of these flowers which become ghost-objects, simulacrums of nature or post-exotic chimeras in a kitch decorative space. Through this « floral choreography » I am staging the illusion of an ideal garden, in accordance with the modern idea of nature, which is a multifaceted and continuously evolving concept. From the feeling of solitude to the ecological danger, the degradation of our relationship to nature is staged in Primavera through its artificiality. With its abundance of visual informations, this installation throws the viewer the challenge to solve the mystery of the disappearance of the original characters in Botticelli’s painting. Being allowed to immerse themselves in the midst of the hundreds of handmade textile flowers, the visitors play the role of witnesses to an unknown ecological catastrophe.

[FR] Avec l’installation Primavera (d’après Sandro Botticelli) je mène une réflexion sur l’héritage culturel et sur les préoccupations écologiques actuelles, pour appréhender un temps suspendu en l’absence de l’être humain. Ces fleurs textiles (produits à la fois de la nature et de la culture) révèlent l’artificialité de notre rapport au monde naturel et interrogent le destin de l'exceptionnalisme humain face à l’histoire. Oscillant entre l’idée de vanité et celle de domesticité, ces fleurs sont des curiosités d’une collection imaginaire, des éléments d’un herbarium chaotique et extravagant. Je souligne ainsi le caractère théâtral et profondément nostalgique de ces fleurs qui deviennent des objets-fantômes, des simulacres de nature ou bien des chimères post-exotiques dans un espace décoratif à l’ambiance kitch. À travers cette « chorégraphie florale » je mets ainsi en scène l’illusion d’un morceau de vie végétal dans un jardin idéal, image conforme à l’idée moderne de nature, qui est de plus en plus un concept replicable à l'infini et se prête à tous les fantasmes. Du sentiment de solitude au péril écologique, la dégradation de notre relation à la nature est mise en scène dans Primavera à travers son artificialité. Avec sa surabondance d’informations visuelles, cette installation offre au regardeur le défi de résoudre le mystère de la disparition des personnages originaux de Botticelli. En ayant le droit de s’engloutir entre les centaines de fausses fleurs réalisées à la main, le visiteur est le premier témoin d'une catastrophe qui a eu lieu.
