PRIMAVERA 2021

[EN] Primavera is a performance visually inspired by Sandro Botticelli’s painting Primavera, in which the barriers between kitsch and sublime, melodrama and tragedy, rational and irrational, permanent and ephemeral, are becoming gradually blurred. This choreographic piece takes place in my art installation Primavera, which is composed of hundreds of handmade textile flowers. This botanical abundance was inspired by both Botticelli’s painting and the millefleur (or “thousand flower”) Flemish tapestries. Botticelli’s painting is enigmatic and sophisticated, but its beauty often hides its obvious narrative, which is one of violence and chaos. Even the splendid flowers in it (500 plant species are said to have been depicted in the painting, with about nearly 200 different flowers of which 130 have been specifically identified) are an ecological aberration, as they belong to different seasons, and do not flower in the same time. Primavera belongs to a series of short, improvised performances which I call “impressions”.

[FR] Primavera est une performance à narration ouverte avec deux personnages, dans laquelle les barrières entre kitsch et sublime, mélodrame et tragédie, rationnel et irrationnel, deviennent de plus en plus floues. Cette pièce chorégraphique a lieu dans mon installation Primavera, qui se compose de plusieurs centaines de fleurs textiles. Cette surabondance botanique a été inspirée par les tapisseries flamandes millefleur et par la peinture Primavera de Sandro Botticelli. Bien que leurs périodes de floraison soient incompatibles, plusieurs centaines de variétés de fleurs se juxtaposent dans ce tableau, tout comme dans l’installation Primavera. Primavera de Botticelli est une peinture énigmatique, mais son élégance porte à occulter sa narration évidente, qui est celle de violence et chaos. Cette performance s’inspire directement de ce tableau, et surtout des cycles successifs de métamorphoses qui y sont représentés. Primavera appartient à une série de courtes performances improvisées que j’appelle des “impressions”.
