NO GHOST JUST A BELL 2020

[EN] No Ghost Just A Bell is a performance piece realized in Lyon, France, one hour before the lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic on the 17th of March 2020. I walked across the city from 11 to 11:47AM, ringing a small bronze bell, a historical artifact which was used in this region during the 1628/1629 plague epidemic. Sounding these bells was believed to break up the miasmic air that caused the disease, keeping demons away and protecting the inhabitants. Fascinated by the myriad ways that humans approach events that affect them, I seek to reveal what lies behind common perception in the deeper context of history.

[FR] No Ghost Just A Bell est une performance réalisée à Lyon (France) le 17 mars 2020, une heure avant le confinement général en réponse à l’épidémie du Coronavirus. De 11h à 11h47, je me suis promenée à travers la ville de plus en plus vide, en tenant une clochette en bronze à la main. Cet objet historique, issu d’une collection privée, avait été utilisé dans la région Rhône-Alpes pendant l’épidémie de peste de 1628/1629. Sonner ces clochettes visait à raréfier l’air qui causait la maladie, éloignant ainsi les démons pour protéger les habitants. J’ai procédé en cet anachronisme par fascination pour les différentes manières dont les humains éprouvent et traitent les forces qui les affectent, celles-ci étant appelées à se renouveler au fil de l’Histoire.
